Monuments Project - Texas

McKinney, Texas,
2022

Completed mural, McKinney, Texas. September 2022 Photograph: Guido van Helten

1—3

This artwork is installed at the historic concrete silos and grain elevator off East Virginia and Main Streets in McKinney, Texas.

The concept is inspired by Guido van Helten’s experiences and observations in the historically working-class area of Eastside McKinney, dining out and conversing with the many family-run small businesses operating in the neighbourhood.

It's easy to overlook the history of the Eastside, because those were not the folks who were immersed in civic leadership per se. They weren't the decision makers for our broader city. So there's this subset of our community that's kind of doing its own thing and figuring out ways to thrive...

There's so many neat things that have happened there, so many neat people that you won't hear their names, but there are things that they have done [that have] imparted such a legacy.1
